  • The annual study by iSee Cars reveals the best-selling 1-5 year old used cars in the US market.
  • Trucks dominate the top three, but SUVs occupy 65 out of the 100 slots in the best-selling list.
  • The Tesla Model 3 remains the most popular used EV, joined for the first time by the Model Y.

Another year has gone by with U.S. buyers continuing to favor full-size trucks as their top choice in the used car market. The annual study by iSee Cars analyzed the sales of over 7.7 million used cars aged between one and five years old (2019 – 2023).

The Ford F-150 is still the most popular used model, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500 rivals. This year, the Ram reclaimed its third-place position edging out the Chevrolet Equinox SUV, which dropped to fourth place.

While the top three is dominated by America’s favorite full-size trucks, SUVs remain the most popular bodystyle in the used car market, occupying 65 out of the 100 slots. The high-riding models are joined by 22 passenger cars, 11 trucks, and 2 minivans.

The most popular 1-5 year-old used SUVs were the Chevrolet Equinox (4th), the Nissan Rogue (7th), the Ford Explorer (8th), and the Toyota RAV4 (9th). As for used passenger cars, the star was the Toyota Camry (5th), followed by the Honda Civic (10th), the Toyota Corolla (11th), and the Nissan Altima (14th).

A big winner for 2024 is the Tesla Model 3 (30th) that gained 17 spots compared to last year and retained the title of the best-selling used EV. For the first time ever there is a second EV on the top 100 list, which is no other than the Tesla Model Y (74th).

According to Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst, if the Tesla models keep moving up at these rates, the Model 3 and Model Y could enter the top 20 in “another year or two”.

The study also highlights the most popular used cars in the 50 largest U.S. cities, offering insight into the varying preferences of buyers based on location. The Ford F-150 secured the top spot in 26 metro areas, cementing its position as the overall leader.

Other notable models include the Chevrolet Equinox, which was the most popular choice in six cities, and the Toyota Camry, which led in four cities. The Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic each claimed the top spot in three cities, while the Tesla Model 3 stood out as the favorite in San Francisco and Seattle, reflecting regional preferences for fully electric vehicles.
