"I'll handle it on my own next time."

A Honda owner is asking mechanics why a simple brake job is so expensive these days. He isn’t the only one troubled by the rising cost of car repairs.

Reddit user @caigematch posted to r/AskMechanics on Jan. 13 to ask a question troubling more than a few car owners these days. “When did brake jobs (pads, rotors, flush) become so expensive?” they wrote.

The user went on to say, “I own a 2001 Honda Accord that required new pads, rotors, and a brake fluid flush, and I ended up paying $1,150 for it. After consulting with friends and family, most of them mentioned that this price is pretty standard these days. Next time, I plan to handle it myself.”

Are routine car repairs becoming pricier these days?

In the discussion, many users supported @caigematch's concerns regarding the increasing expenses of car repairs. One user commented, “Absolutely! Over the past five years, labor charges have surged. Maintaining a vehicle, even an inexpensive one, has become increasingly challenging.”

Other users have verified that the original poster will cut costs by handling the task themselves in the future. "I recently installed high-quality rotors and pads on my 2015 Honda CR-V from Advance Auto. I'm 68 years old and not a professional mechanic. It only cost me $400 for all four wheels," one user shared.

Another user chimed in, "It really bothers me when people come in claiming they can get it done for less, but I feel like I have to share the word... Have you checked out Rock Auto? I just did a similar job on my 2016 Civic and only spent $250. Their prices are incredibly low, and there are so many choices!"

Following their own recent repair experience, another user commented, “The pricing is just completely outrageous.”

What factors contribute to the increasing costs of car repairs?

According to a February CNBC report, the Reddit users have a point when it comes to rising car repair costs. And experts aren’t exactly sure what to blame. The article states that it’s likely a combination of several different variables, including the computerization of modern vehicles, changes in materials and manufacturing methods, supply chain issues, and a labor shortage.

This could also be linked to the actions of drivers or possibly an issue with the consumer price index data itself. “You may experience the same type of accident as you would have a decade ago,” an expert informed CNBC. “However, now there are three extra sensors on the affected part of the vehicle that might need replacing.”

According to the article, the average hourly labor rate for repairs increased to $60 in 2023, marking a $10 rise compared to five years prior. An expert referenced in the piece anticipates that car manufacturers will strive to reduce these expenses to ensure continued vehicle sales in the future.
