Starbucks Implements New Policy: Customers Must Make a Purchase to Use Seating or Restrooms

Starbucks has decided to change its policy regarding customer access to seating and restrooms. This week, the well-known chain revealed that it will be discontinuing its open-door approach, requiring customers to make a purchase in order to sit down or use the facilities.

According to Starbucks representative Jaci Anderson, the recently implemented guidelines aim to prioritize the safety of paying customers.

"Anderson stated, 'Our goal is to ensure that every individual feels invited and at ease in our stores. By establishing clear guidelines for behavior and the usage of our facilities, we can foster a more pleasant atmosphere for all.'"

Starbucks will implement a new "code of conduct" that will be showcased in each store, starting January 27th.

“Our aim is to make sure that our spaces are primarily reserved for our customers. The Coffeehouse Code of Conduct, which is a standard practice among retailers, aims to clarify that areas such as our cafes, patios, and restrooms are intended for the use of customers and partners,” the updated code of conduct explains. “This code is prominently displayed in our locations to remind customers of their contribution to fostering a community coffeehouse that feels inviting and welcoming.”

Opinions on Starbucks' new policy were polarized across social media platforms.

“And gone is the one reason id set foot inna Starbucks” commented one person.

“Good move. People can just buy the cheapest thing on their menu for like $3 or so if they wanna use their internet” said another user on X
